Honors/Accelerated Math Placement Guidelines & Information:
Math 6 Accelerated
*Students who are unable to attend the Boost Camp are welcome to study on their own to prepare for the Boost Exam. Students must score at least a 70% on the exam to be considered for enrollment in the accelerated course in the Fall. See below for boost camp/exam and online study guide information.
- A's and B's in 5th grade math all three trimesters and 83% or above on the CVUSD benchmark exam (end-of-course exam)
- Current Math 6 CP students: Passing Boost Camp grade or 70% or above on the Boost Exam*
- Current Math 6 Accelerated students: A's or B's in Math 6 Accelerated both semesters
- Incoming 6th grade students who pass the Math 6 Accelerated Challenge Exam with an 83% or above
- Current Math 7 CP students: Passing Boost Camp grade or 70% or above on the Boost Exam*
- Current Math 7 Accelerated students: C's in Math 7 Accelerated either semester
- A's and B's in Math 7 Accelerated both semesters
- A's and B's in Algebra 1 H both semesters

For honors/accelerated placement consideration, an Academic Petition is required if a student does not meet the above automatic qualifications.
Honors/Accelerated Math Placement Exam Information:
New students enrolling from out-of-district schools and MATES who are interested in accelerated/honors math placement, please send an email to Ms. Collett at [email protected] to register for an exam date. Please also provide a copy of grades/transcripts and plan to arrive at the Colina Counseling Office about 5-10 minutes before the exam. Ms. Custodio, Math Department Chair, will bring the group of students testing to her classroom. Please plan for about an hour, but students do have up to an hour and a half to complete the exam. Students should bring two no. 2 pencils. Test scores and math placement information will be sent via email.
For students interested in honors/accelerated placement, exams are offered for placement in the following classes:
For students interested in honors/accelerated placement, exams are offered for placement in the following classes:
- Math 6 Accelerated (5th grade end-of-course exam):
- Students in CVUSD elementary schools and MATES will take this exam in their 5th grade classrooms in late-May/early-June
- All other students interested in taking this exam, email Ms. Collett to register for one of the test dates at Colina Middle School
- This exam will assess 5th grade math standards, which can be found on the California Department of Education website
- Math 7 Accelerated (Math 6 Accelerated challenge/end-of-course or Boost exam):
- Incoming 6th grade students need to take the Math 6 Accelerated challenge exam offered through the CVUSD District Office (registration information and link below)
- All other incoming 7th grade students interested in taking this placement exam, email Ms. Collett to register for one of the test dates at Colina Middle School
- Students currently in Math 6 CP in CVUSD need to take the boost camp/exam (registration information and link below)
- This exam will assess all of the Math 6CP standards and half of the 7CP standards, specifically students will analyze proportional relationships and use them to solve real-world and mathematical problems; apply and extend previous understandings of operations with fractions to add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers; use properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions and solve real-life and mathematical problems using numerical and algebraic expressions and equations
- *Students currently in Math 6 Accelerated in CVUSD who earn a B- or above both semesters will automatically continue on to Math 7 Accelerated. Students who earn below a B- will move to Math 7 CP or will need an approved petition to continue in accelerated.
- Algebra 1 CP (Math 7 Accelerated challenge/end-of-course or Boost exam):
- Students currently in Math 7 CP in CVUSD need to take the boost camp/exam (registration information and link below)
- This exam will assess the second half of the 7th Grade State Standards and all of the 8th Grade State Standards, specifically students will draw, construct and describe geometrical figures and describe the relationships between them; solve real-life and mathematical problems involving angle measure, area, surface area, and volume; use random sampling to draw inferences about a population; draw informal comparative inferences about two populations and investigate chance processes and develop, use, and evaluate probability models. For the Math 8 CP standards, students focus on three critical areas: (1) formulating and reasoning about expressions and equations, including modeling an association in bivariate data with a linear equation, and solving linear equations and systems of linear equations; (2) grasping the concept of a function and using functions to describe quantitative relationships; (3) analyzing two- and three-dimensional space and figures using distance, angle, similarity, and congruence, and understanding and applying the Pythagorean Theorem.
- *Students currently in Math 7 Accelerated in CVUSD who earn a C either semester will move to Algebra 1 CP.
- Algebra 1 Honors (Math 7 Accelerated challenge/end-of-course exam):
- Incoming 7th/8th grade students interested in taking this placement exam, email Ms. Collett to register for one of the test dates at Colina Middle School - placement is determined by exam score, current math class, and grades
- *Students currently in Math 7 Accelerated in CVUSD who earn a B- or above both semesters will automatically continue on to Algebra 1 H.
- Geometry Honors (Algebra 1 Honors end-of-course exam):
- Incoming 8th grade students interested in taking this placement exam, email Ms. Collett to register for one of the test dates at Colina Middle School - placement is determined by exam score, current math class, and grades
- *Students currently in Algebra 1 Honors in CVUSD who earn a B- or above both semesters will automatically continue on to Geometry H.
